Brahm Bhat

The Brahm Bhat are a Hindu caste, found in North India. They are also known as Baram Bhatt, Biram Bhatt, or just Bhatt. The Brahm Bhatt are one of the two sub-divisions of the Bhat ethnic group, the other sub-division being that of Rai Bhats.[1]

History and origin

The community claim descent from Birbal, the famous courtier of Mughal Emperor Akbar. They are sub-group of the larger Brahmin caste, and are strictly endogamous. The community are related to thre Rai Bhat community, both being sub-groups of the larger Bhat community.[2] There common surname are Barot, Rao & Brahmbhatt in Gujarat & Rajasthan

Present circumstances

The community was traditionally associated with composing poetry, and reciting it on ceremonial occasions. They were also involved with the keeping of genealogical records of other caste groups. The community are mainly cultivators, and often sharecroppers. Like many other bard communities of India, such as the Mirasi, Rai Bhat, Charan, Barot, Gadhvi and Rao they have the decline of their traditional arts, and many are now simply cultivators.[3] The community are Hindus of the Shivite sect. They are distributed over most of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat & Rajasthan, Jharkhand.
